This collection of artworks, though varied in medium—drawings, paintings, and digitally rendered pieces—shares a common thread in its approach. Primarily observational, some works emerged from direct engagement with my subjects, while others were created using reference photos. Rooted in the philosophy of process over product, as proposed by Wholly Drawing, and inspired by Krishnamurti’s notion that “the observer is the observed,” I approached each piece without the intent of producing a “good” or “realistic” representation. Instead, my focus was on immersing myself in the act of observation and truly getting to know my subjects. This process fostered an intimate relationship between myself and the figures I depicted, cultivating a deep sense of care and responsibility in their representation. Through careful observation, I attuned myself to the unique details—marks, tones, and specific features—that defined each subject. Over time, this engagement transformed into a dialogue, where the act of mark-making felt akin to carving from stone: with each intentional stroke, a form emerged from plainness.
This collection stands as a testament to the power of a process-oriented approach—one where attentive observation and deliberate rendering reveal not only the physical likeness of a subject but also its essence.
